LECA® LWA was recently utilised for an urgent void filling for an old railway bridge beneath the Ibrox stadium, which hosts the world famous Scottish football team Glasgow Rangers.
LECA® LWA was recently utilised for an urgent void filling for an old railway bridge beneath the Ibrox stadium, which hosts the world famous Scottish football team Glasgow Rangers. The access to this underground area was extremely limited and this required a quick installation solution to complete in a short time frame. Alternative filling material was deemed too heavy for this infill project and furthermore, the chasm beneath the stadium surrounding area stretched deep into the ground – making it technically unfeasible for alternative aggregate.
LECA® LWA provided the ideal solution with the pneumatic blowing facility which could reach deep inside the old tunnel and this project required the full utilisation of the 50 meter reach of the pneumatic hose. 1600m3 of LECA® LWA (10-20mm) was blown into the void over the space of a few days – thanks to the rapid speed of pneumatic delivery which can be up to 16 times quicker compared to alternative material.
As a fill material, LECA® LWA can effectively decrease the earth pressure. Due to its lightness the vertical earth pressure impacting the structure is up to 75% lower than induced by the natural rock fill.
Being light weight and round in nature, LECA® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate can be transported and placed more easily than that of traditional fill in these difficult to access areas. This project benefited greatly from the reduction in pressure and the avoidance of additional costs in strengthening.
