The private International School was developed by Stewart Milne Construction, a leading company known for their expertise and innovation. The site occupies an existing property in Aberdeen. Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate 10-20mm, was used as the backfill material for a substantial pre-fabricated swimming pool which was installed into one of the existing buildings. Leca® LWA was delivered loose-tipped to site and blown pneumatically into place utilising Leca® UK’s dedicated blowing vehicle.
Owing to restricted access to the swimming pool area, the majority of the 554m³ of Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate 10-20mm was installed pneumatically with the remaining 30m³ placed manually. Due to the nature of the material and the installation method, there were no time delays for settlement or concrete drying periods.
The Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate was blown into place in layers of 600mm; during this process a natural compaction of approximately 5% was achieved, which then required just 3 passes with hand operated compaction equipment prior to installation of the concrete slab in preparation for surface treatment.
When used in this type of application, Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate will reduce the weight acting on the structure by at least 75% in comparison with traditional quarry fill materials. This reduction in weight avoids potential bowing and distortion during construction.
The pneumatic installation in Aberdeen in temperatures of -10 degrees took just 4½ days in comparison with traditional materials which would more likely exceed a 2-3 week period. The speed of application of Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate reduced on site labour and greatly improved project efficiencies.
