LECA LWA is a natural product - small, light, air-filled grains obtained by Danish clay. The basic material is ball clay, which, after thorough pre-treatment is heated and expanded in the rotating ovens. Finally burned off at about 11000C.

LECA LWA is produced by the treatment, which is an environmentally friendly Danish natural product. It is indestructible, frost-resistant, non-combustible and attacked by rot, fungi or insects. Because of its low weight – LECA LWA is extraordinarily easy to handle compared to alternative solutions – making LECA LWA an effective solution.

Biofilter Plant

LECA LWA is produced by the Danish Leca A / S and is subject to both internal and external quality control. Danish Leca A / S quality management system by DS / EN ISO 9002: 1994 and Environmental Management System DS / EN ISO 14001: 1996. Both systems are certified by Det Norske Veritas.

Using LECA LWA for Biofilter Development

LECA LWA has a proven ability to be an effective solution for bio-filtration and has been effectively applied in many biofilter plants throughout the UK and Ireland - LECA LWA also offers the additional advantage of easy and effortless delivery and the management after installation is simple and easy.

LECA LWA filtration properties

LECA LWA can be used as a filling material in a biofilter to provide an accelerated process to clean the air for odorants. The advantage of using LECA LWA is that it is an effective filler material with a relatively large surface area. A relatively large surface area is necessary for a sufficient amount of microorganisms responsible the actual reaction of odorants for non-smelling substances.

LECA LWA is also a heat insulating material, which is important in the filtration process when the filter material is constantly 'hot'.

To obtain the best possible degree of purification is it is necessary to apply a porous filter material, through which the process air are able to create a homogeneous passage. In addition, it is necessary with a relatively large surface area to have a home for the essential microorganisms.

Real life biofiltration plant

Exhaust air generated from plants have been traditionally treated by using physical and chemical methods. However, it has been consistently proven that these methods are often associated with relatively high development costs, high maintenance and do not offer full degradability, but transforming a contaminant form to another.

In contrast, biological air purification, containing LECA LWA filling material provides relatively low costs, require little maintenance and provides, with the correct usage, something close to full degradability of the odor compounds.


Biofilters established with advantage in connection with odor-emitting companies. Be prepared for each company an adequate ventilation system, whereby the process returns assembly and headed to the biofilter. The air is passed through the filler material (LECA-mass) in which the purification process occurs. The cleaned air is then fed out through the corresponding chimney.

Using LECA LWA in Biofiltration

The air is forced up through the filter and is sucked out of the building through an effective fan system.

In order for micro-organisms to function at an optimal rate, this requires a certain level of humidity, which can be obtained through irrigation. For the achievement of full degree of purification is it is therefore important to optimize irrigation and ensure even moisture distribution through utilising LECA LWA.
