Whilst LECA® LWA is a simple product, our solutions are innovative. Alone, it is one single expanded clay pellet, but when combined the possibilities are limitless - whether it is for lightweight use within structural foundation or infrastructure on weak and unstable ground, insulating under and within floor construction, sound proofing buildings, filtering water or air, removing smells from sewer, manufacturing or farming application, providing aeration and moisture to tree and plant roots and landscape or even decorating plant pots, the uses are endless.

Filtralite Solutions



Filtralite® develops and manufactures quality filter media for all water treatment applications:

• Filtralite® Pure for drinking water solutions, both for physical filtration and biological treatment

• Filtralite® Clean for wastewater treatment, both for biological process and tertiary filtration

• Filtralite® Nature for onsite water remediation

Filtralite® filter media is made by heating clay to around 1200° C, followed by crushing and sieving.

Dry particle densities in the range from 500 to 1.600 kg/m3 and aggregate size from 0 to 20 mm can be “tailor-made” for specific applications.

In addition to its low density and high porosity, Filtralite® offers high abrasion and impact resistance.

horticultural use - Promoting healthy Vegetation in Plants and Gardens


Over compacted soils can inhibit healthy root development. Mixing LECA® LWA with soil will not only ensure over compaction does not take place, it will also assist with the balance of air and water to soil required to promote healthy vegetation and stimulate growth in flowers, plants and natural vegetation. LECA® LWA can also be used effectively for hydroponics without the need for soil and provides the benefits to gardeners and growers in being lightweight and a powerful medium for plant growth.


Bee keeping - providing platforms for bees to eat and drink

Bee Keeper

Thirsty bees often come to drink from natural still water reservoirs, but unfortunately many of them drown. Beekeepers try to prevent this in many different ways. They provide their apiaries with water pans filled with straw, moss or tree branches, but all these natural materials go rotten over time and pollute water, therefore, they need frequent replacement.

A simple solution to the problem is to add a thin layer of an eco-friendly material like LECA® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate to the water pan. 

Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate can provide additional usefulness through its fundamental properties in saving bees from drowning and helping them to convert the syrup into winter feed. Through using the Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate it is easier to make sure the insects will be safely fed. Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate is chemically neutral so it does not react with the syrup and helps to keep it fresh for a longer period of time.

Popular in areas of dense building concentration such as a built-up city life, green rooftops are becoming very popular. Thanks to the light weight of LECA® LWA, lifting this material to the city scape rooftops has proved to be much easier and cost effective than other traditional building materials. Together with Leca® LWA's natural properties which promote healthy growth for plants and vegetation, an adequate layer of Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate will also provide thermal insulation, capillary water break, and drainage between the soils and supporting structure. Additional benefits include improvements in bearing capacity and aid in water retention where deluge is problematic in receiving drainage system making Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate the ideal aggregate material for green rooftop developments.

LECA® LWA has proven to be more effective than traditional methods when acting as a brake for fast moving vehicles either in race track location or on roads with steep incline. Lotus Company Head, explained that  “When a car spins off into Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate it absorbs the energy, bringing the vehicle to a rapid halt without the risk of overturning or substantial damage. It is an economical solution offering superior stopping power and is more eco-friendly than the traditional alternatives”. Tests using a 30cm layer of the material brought a standard saloon car travelling at 56 mph to a stop in just 23 metres.

Football pitches and artificial turf on sports fields

Football fields replacing grass with artificial turf can be used throughout the year providing all weather training facilities. Using a layer of LECA® LWA beneath the artificial grass to provide both drainage and insulation, the field or pitch can be used more frequently than natural grass fields. In this type of application, Leca® LWA is used to increase and promote efficient drainage and provide an insulating blanket to guard against damage through frost penetration. During installation Leca® LWA can reduce excavations and minimise both transport and installation costs.

Acting as a natural water filtering solution LECA® LWA can also remove harmful substances. Working on a moderately different principle, the filtering element of LECA® LWA has been used as a replacement for traditional sand filters. Filtralite, the heavier brand of Leca® primarily used for filtration due to its weight and specific manufacture, can be characterized as small hard pieces of open sponge, full of internal pores. As the water passes through the filter, the particles are trapped in the Filtralite pouches, creating clean and filtered water.


Pipeline treatment and frost insulation

LECA® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate is ideal for the settlement control and frost insulation of pipelines located in soft soil conditions. The rounded nature of LECA® LWA is perfect for protecting and seating of a pipeline and / or ducting prior to backfill. The open textured fill also makes Leca® Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate ideal for use within filter drainage application where water penetration is necessary through the pipe surround.

Differential settlements through frost penetration within infrastructure application can also be prevented by a designed mass of LECA® LWA applied to reduce frost heave between frost-susceptible and frost resistant structures.
