SCREED FLOOR FOR COTTAGE RENOVATION
Leca® Uno was specified as part of a cottage renovation project in Cambridgeshire, where the aim was to create a lightweight screed floor compatible with traditional building fabric.
Older properties often require flooring systems that manage moisture effectively while avoiding excessive structural load. In this project, Leca® Uno provided a practical solution that aligns with the requirements of heritage construction and sympathetic renovation.
Lightweight Properties was a key factor in the specification.
For this cottage renovation, Leca® Uno was chosen primarily for helping to ensure the new floor works in harmony with the existing masonry and traditional construction methods.

Design Considerations
Simplifying the Floor Construction
Other areas of the cottage had previously been completed using a double slab floor system. For this room, the goal was to simplify the process by installing a single structural slab, reducing labour and improving installation efficiency.
Using bagged Leca® Uno offered several advantages for the renovation environment:
• Removed the need for bulk sand deliveries
• Enabled controlled mixing directly on site
• Allowed each batch to be mixed and placed immediately
This approach is particularly suited to smaller renovation projects where access and storage space may be limited.
Installation Method
The screed installation was straightforward and carried out over a short period:
• Mixed by bucket on site
• Installed over a three-day period
• Walkable after approximately eight hours
During installation, the mix proved easy to handle and adjust. Any minor high points could be corrected during placement, helping achieve an even finished surface.
Final Outcome & Customer Feedback
The finished screed provides a stable floor structure well suited to a traditional cottage renovation. By utilising lightweight aggregate, the system delivered both practical installation benefits and compatibility with historic building fabric.
Ali Porter, who works as a Fine Art Paintings Conservator at Conserve Painting Ltd, kindly provided her feedback on the results at her cottage renovation, "The lightweight nature of the product and the manageable bag size were also a major benefit. Using 25L Leca® Uno bags removed the need for bulk sand deliveries and allowed us to mix each batch directly on site and place it immediately."
For architects and renovation professionals working with heritage buildings or traditional rural properties, systems such as Leca® Uno offer a reliable approach to achieving modern floor performance while respecting the needs of older structures.
