PASSIVHAUS HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL

CURRIE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL

Leca® Lightweight Fill 10-20mm (LWA) was recently specified for a swimming pool complex at Currie Community High School. This in the first phase of the Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Investment Programme and is going to be delivered in Spring 2025. The new school is being developed to Passivhaus standards which provides comfort but uses little energy for heating and cooling - aiming to be the first Passivhaus secondary school with a swimming pool in Scotland.

Leca® LWA was pneumatically delivered to fill the voids around the perimeter of the new swimming pool - due to limited access of the facility, with a piping system reaching up to 50m to deliver the material.

FACTS

Amount of material: 700m3 of Leca® 10-20mm

Interesting Fact: The new school is aiming to be the first Passivhaus Secondary School with a swimming pool in Scotland.

Delivery Method: Pneumatic Delivery

Overview of Project

The material was delivered on walking floors to the site and was stockpiled in a near carpark which allowed for quick re-filling of the pneumatic delivery vehicle. This speeded up the process of delivery and provided a cost saving solution for the new development.

Leca® LWA was pneumatically delivered through one access point. The pneumatic delivery provided a rapid delivery rate and minimal manpower to complete.

Through specifying Leca® LWA - engineering issues could be overcome which would have been found with type 1 fill material and GSB type fill. This reduced the weight acting on the rear of the structure by at least 75%, in comparison to traditional fill materials. This reduction in weight can avoid potential sliding, overturning, slip and tilting or bearing failures.

The natural lightweight properties of the material provided strength and a lightweight solution which had reduced impact on the overall swimming pool structure and limiting the excess weight on the filtration pipework.

The specification of Leca® LWA supported the overall Passivhaus ambitions of the new high school.
